There’s a plethora of tools these days touted as “Distraction free writing” utilities. These blank the screen, sometimes play a little ambient sound track, and present as simple a palette as possible to allow the writer to conctrate on writing.
Except, they’re all rather distracting.
They’re distracting because they force passionless writing. There’s no emphasis, there’s no subtlety, there’s nothing but an enforced uniformity that kills creativity. They may be great for giving concentration for writing a memo, or a letter to your solicitor, but in terms of actually writing something with emotion, it’s about as useful as trying to talk dirty by reading out a financial report.
I love the idea of Write Room and OmmWriter, but the simple fact of the matter is that these tools are passionless, sterile applications that kill a writer’s creativity. They’re a great idea, very poorly implemented.
