I had my third tattoo session this week, and my Icarus tattoo is continuing along nicely. One thing my artist Kim and I agreed on right from the start was that I didn’t want a traditional Icarus sort of artwork, where Icarus is just plunging in a straight line, and I certainly didn’t want a traditional depiction of the sun. Instead, I wanted light and the impression of heat.
As a result of the latest session, I now have some colour on Icarus, and the clouds around him are starting to form. I decided on an burnished orange/yellow cast to the clouds, and the cumulus shape of the clouds are starting to take effect. One thing for sure – I’m already looking forward to the next session.
Oh, in case you’re wondering – yes, there’s a definite bio-mechanical cast to Icarus. Being close friends, Kim knew how much of a geek I am and wanted to bring an impression of technology into Icarus.
As work continues on Icarus and the sky around him, I’ll need to start thinking of how Daedalus will be shown below him, on my forearm. I’m thinking that he should be positioned as if he’s going to try to catch his son on the way down.
